Honors Credit for Concert Band

Requirements:

Part 1: Quarterly Requirements (to be turned in by the last day of each marking period)

In addition to all standard ensemble requirements as outlined in the course syllabus, honors students must:

    • Complete a practice log

    • Complete a marking period summary

Choose one of the following:

    • 2A. Take at least 6 private lessons with an approved private lesson teacher. Turn in the private lesson report.

    • 2B. Write a one page report on a composer, musician, piece of music, music theory, music history, musical style, musical genre, your instrument, or any other musical topic approved in advance by Mrs. Klein. Musician interviews and concert reviews are also acceptable.

    • 2C. Create a 5 – 10 minute presentation on a composer, musician, piece of music, music theory, music history, musical style, musical genre, your instrument, or any other musical topic approved in advance by Mrs. Klein.

    • 2D. Compose a piece of music for the instrument you play in band (or for an ensemble which includes the instrument you play in band)

    • 2E. Study and perform an etude or solo in addition to standard band repertoire.

    • 2F. Create your own assignment (assignments must be approved in advance by Mrs. Klein).

Part 2: Additional Course Requirements (Must complete at least 2 by the end of the school year)

    • Taking music theory and maintaining an 85% average or better.

    • Participation in a regularly meeting ensemble outside the school district (on the instrument you play in band - BYSO, Teen Jazz Project, etc.).

    • Participation in NYSSMA Conference All-State (on the instrument you play in band).

    • Participation in NYSSMA Area All-State (on the instrument you play in band).

    • Participation in BCMEA All-County (on the instrument you play in band).

    • Member of the UEHS Musical Pit Orchestra (on the instrument you play in band).

    • NYSSMA Ensemble Evaluation of level IV-VI receiving either O or A, A-, or A+

    • Member of a regularly meeting school small ensemble.

    • Participation in three or more other school music department groups (UEMB, UE Musical, Chorale, Jazz Choir, Chorus, Jazz Band, Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble)

    • Complete an instrumental jury consisting of:

      • A lesson etude chosen by the student

      • A lesson etude chosen by the instructor

      • A solo piece chosen by the student

Part 3: NYSSMA Solo Evaluation

NYSSMA Solo Evaluation at IV receiving E or O, or level V or VI receiving an A-, A, or A+ (on the instrument you play in band). Seniors are exempt from this requirement however if a senior chooses to complete a NYSSMA evaluation it can be used as one of the two additional course requirements for part 2.
